When 6 Is Better Than 8: Edmunds.com Tests Out The 2025 Ram 1500 Tungsten

2025 RAM 1500 Tungsten Pickup Truck Edmunds.com Review

The last time a Ram pickup truck only had a V6 was all the way back in the 1950s, when it was called the Dodge B-Series truck. Ever since, there has been at least a V8 engine optional. However, the 2025 Ram 1500 Tungsten is now powered by a twin-turbo inline 6 that seems to ride all over the old Hemi V8.

Edmunds Review

A recent shakedown test by Edmunds.com proved this latest Ram truck's capability. The Tungsten model is powered by a high output 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-6 producing 540 horsepower and 521 lb-ft of torque, and in normal output makes 420 horsepower and 469 lb-ft of torque in the Ram Tradesman.

2025 Ram Performance

In the 0-60 tests, the Tungsten hit 60 mph in 4.7 seconds and 13 seconds through the ¼-mile at 104.7 mph. Those same tests showed the Tradesman will get to 60 in 5.2 seconds passed through the ¼-mile in 13.6 seconds at 98.1 mph.

2024 Ram Performance

The previous generation Ram 1500 models Edmunds tested were the Rebel GT with a 7.3 second 0-60 time and the Big Horn that did the same deed in 6.9. Both trucks went through the ¼-mile in 15.3 seconds at 89 mph.

Faster Than Actual Sports Cars

“Any way that you slice it, the numbers show a massive performance gap between the V8 and even the new straight-six. The Tungsten, specifically, was an absolute missile at our test track, its 4.7-second 0-to-60-mph time beating performance cars like the new Nissan Z and Toyota GR Corolla Morizo Edition.

How Is The New Truck As A Truck?

Fast zero to 60 and quarter-mile times are all well and good, but how does the latest generation Ram do when genuinely using it as a truck? Edmunds found it to be really good, saying, “These acceleration times match up with our impressions of driving both of the straight-six variants on the street and while towing. They have effortless power, and even if you're towing a sizable trailer, neither engine feels taxed at any point. From a performance standpoint, it's safe to say that you won't miss the V8 at all. But you might miss the Hemi's exhaust note; these six-cylinders just don't have quite the same growl.”

In Conclusion

In his conclusion, the author said that the new Ram 1500 Tungsten is an honest truck with good intentions that it truly delivers on: “People lie, but numbers don't. The Ram 1500's new straight-six engine pumps out more power (no matter which version) and gives the truck a big boost when it comes to performance. Sure, the fuel economy hasn't improved, but you're getting a significant jump in acceleration and power without paying a fuel penalty.”
