Chevy Tahoe vs Toyota Sequoia
Jun 16, 2024 - 4 minute read
The Chevrolet Tahoe is a brilliant SUV that’s hard to compare against anything else in its segment. With the choice of multiple different types of engines, 2WD or 4WD, luxury or Z71 off-road packages, and standard safety and technology features that should have it costing more than it does, the Tahoe is the vehicle to beat in the segment.
A Winning Formula?
Like every other vehicle in the large SUV class, the new Toyota Sequoia aims to achieve a remarkable feat and best the Tahoe. But, with a higher base price than the Chevy and with less overall interior capacity, that’s going to be a bit of a challenge against the continually reigning champion of interior space and overall usability, especially if you have more than one kid and a pet.
Chevy Tahoe Price and Engines
Ford 2024, the Chevrolet Tahoe continues to be the king of all family haulers in the segment with a base price of just $56,200 and your choice of a 5.3-liter V8 that makes 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque, a 6.2-liter V8 producing 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, or a 3.0-liter inline-6 turbocharged diesel with 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. The Tahoe comes standard with 2WD and can be optioned with 4WD. All engines send power through a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Toyota Sequoia Price and Engine
With three rows of seats and a base MSRP of $61,275, the 2024 Toyota is no slouch. The only engine available is a twin-turbocharged hybrid 3.5-liter V6 that produces 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque, combined with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Like the Tahoe, buyers can choose between standard 2WD and optional 4WD.
Toyota Interior Capacities
When it comes to the various cargo capacities, you start to see the real differences between the two SUVs. The Toyota has between 11.5 and 22.3 cu.ft. of cargo space behind the third row, depending on how you have the rear seats configured, 49 cu.ft. with the last row folded, and a total of 86.9 cu.ft. with both the second and third rows down. Car and Driver said in their review of the Sequoia, "Cargo space behind the third row is limited too and, unfortunately, dropping the rearmost seats to fit more stuff in the back is hindered by an uneven load floor with a high lift-over height." Kelley Blue Book remarked how uninspired the interior is, saying, "In general, the Sequoia’s cabin is — acceptable. That applies to the interior design and materials, as well as space. That said, this generation is slightly less accommodating than the previous one."
Tahoe Interior Capacities
The Tahoe does not need to have its third row in a special configuration for maximum usability, like the Sequoia. Behind the third row is 25.5 cu.ft. of space, and with that row folded, the Tahoe gives you 72.6 cu.ft. Folding the second row down makes the cabin absolutely cavernous with 122.9 cu.ft., or 36 more cu.ft. than the Toyota with all its seats folded. As Kelley Blue Book said about the big Chevy, "Ample space is a trademark of the Tahoe, and this latest model boasts cargo room that handily outmatches the Ford Expedition, Toyota Sequoia, and Nissan Armada, its key rivals in the full-size SUV segment." Car and Driver noted the ease of getting things into the rear hatch area, "The Tahoe's interior packaging also provides a low, flat load floor thanks to its independent rear suspension; the cargo area with the second and third rows folded balloons to 123 cubic feet. And we managed to fit six carry-on suitcases behind the third row."
A Third Row Built For Adults
As a large SUV, you would expect all rows of seats to be able to handle full-size adults comfortably, especially since these SUVs are built to last their owners well into a kid’s teenage and adult years. However, not so fast on that thought. Car and Driver said in their review of the Toyota Sequoia, “... its rear seats are spacious enough for kids to get comfortable. Hauling adults back there is a different story, as the third row is altogether too cramped." Compare that with what Autoblog.com said about the third-row seats in the Chevy Tahoe: “... even tall adults have loads of room to sit quite comfortably for extended periods of time."
GM Super Cruise
One of the best features the Chevrolet Tahoe has is GM Super Cruise, the brilliant hands-free Advanced Driver Assistance System that has mapped more than 750,000 miles of road throughout the United States and Canada. It allows drivers on the highway to relax and let the Chevy do the steering, along with the braking and accelerating. The 2024 Toyota Sequoia has no advanced hands-free system like the Tahoe. Checkmate.
